First time back on the water, since last year and it was OK. I went to sail Friday at e new venue, but by the time I sussed the place, after turning up late, the tide turned, so gave it a miss. Missed a big day at Point Clear Saturday as well with speeds of 30kts available in the lagoon.
Nearly missed today as well because a few sailors said parking will be an issue. Got ready for my usual 40 mile bike ride when at the last minute Dave / Graham what’s app pic of Bradfield showing loads of parking! FFS had a mad rush to get trailer ready and bike kit off. Windsurfing is very stressful! Several sailors turned up most on foils and 2 or 3 on fin. I really wanted to go fin, as the wind was a good F4 on the far side of Bradders, but there was a large wind shadow beach side.
Went foiling in the end, but regretted it within the hour as the wind freshened and James on a 135 Bolt was peeing all over the place. Def prefer fin in high winds. I fitted the 84 wing on the Slingshot foil, which was way too big for the conditions now. The 7.0 sail was also too big, so had loads of overfoiling and wipeouts in the windy sets. Def should have been a fin day. However, thankfully the wind eased. The good guys were flying all over the place, but I started getting a few runs by holding a tight line to windward and flying low. As soon as I released the board off wind, everything goes wrong and I started to overfoil. Experimented quite a lot today and to be honest I can say I can foil. Take off is quite easy with the big S/L 84cm wind but by Christ it’s very slow unless windy. This is a light wind gadget and I look forwards to pairing it with the 48cm rear wing, because the tail end is unbalanced and seems a bit wobbly and not controlling sustained flight as well as I think it can, compare to the 76cm front wing which with hindsight would have been the better choice. Sailed a few times up to Manningtree which was flat but found the downwind leg a burner on the back leg so didn't go to Wrabness. That's the complete opposite to the RRD foil I had which went downwind like a dream but was a pig to take off in light winds. DC says dont reach on a foil - its either beat or downwind drag, so will persevere with that. The mast needed to go forward to keep the board down but I couldn't budge the mast base. All the foilers have improved and the good guys at the next level pulling off gybes all the time. I dont like my stance. It’s nothing like on a fin. Stiff. upright, front foot in straps but back over the bag back one. Foiler’s advise me not to go for the back straps, but the several there was foiling fine, it that strap. Think it improves that awful vertical stance which is unattractive and pretty boring. Thats why I think my foiling at the mo is boring, as I can’t just sit in the straps and harness and just blast around.
I accidentally covered my GPS watch with my wetsuit so the data turned off at the end I think. Last mileage was around 15nm and top speed was 14.9kts
